The county seat is Salinas. Monterey County is a member of the regional governmental agency, Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments. As of 2007 the population of the County was estimated to be 407,637. Geographically, the County covers 2,127,359 acres of which 304,035 belong to Los Padres National Forest and 164,503 to the Ventana Wilderness Monterey County has a rich and varied history, the city of Monterey was the capital of California under Spanish and Mexican rule. The Mission San Carlos Borroméo de Carmelo is a destination for pilgrims seeking a spiritual experience and history buffs who find the California Missions to be both fascinating and beautiful. The Missions played a vital role in the settlement of California. The Carmel Mission is one of the most beautiful and historically significant of all the missions in California.
Also playing a vital role in the settlement of California was the City of Monterey. Monterey served as California's capital under Spanish, Mexican and U.S. military rule. The U.S. flag was first officially raised in California here on July 7, 1846, bringing 600,000 square miles of land to the United States.
The coastline, including Big Sur Scenic Route One and the 17 Mile Drive on the Monterey Peninsula has made the county world famous. The economy is primarily based upon tourism in the coastal regions, and agriculture in the Salinas River Valley.
