Salinas is known for being the hometown of famed writer and Nobel Prize laureate John Steinbeck. The National Steinbeck Center, is located in Old Town. The Museum offers three distinct visitor experiences in literature and history, agriculture and art, as well special events and educational programs. In the John Steinbeck Exhibition Hall, literature jumps off the printed page and into your imagination. You can discover Steinbeck's world through interactive, multisensory exhibits for all ages, rare artifacts, and seven themed theaters showcasing East of Eden, Cannery Row, Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath and much more.

Salinas is the county seat and largest municipality of Monterey County. World renowned as the heart of the agricultural community in Monterey County, it has a unique climate and soil content making it one of the most highly productive agricultural environments in the world. More produce is grown in Monterey County than any other county in the U.S. earning us the nickname, "The Salad Bowl of the World." Salinas grows 80 percent of the nation’s lettuce, 50 percent of its cauliflower and mushrooms, 25 percent of its celery, 60 percent of its broccoli and 90 percent of its artichokes. Our temperate climate is is also ideal for the floral industry and grape vineyards planted by world-famous vintners. Salinas’s residents enjoy sunny days and cool nights.

 

 

Known for its week-long cavalcade of events, California Rodeo "Big Week"  is the largest community event held in Salinas.  This week offers parades, barbecues, cowboy poetry, fireworks, concerts, a carnival, and of course, the Rodeo events. The Rodeo itself is designed to operate like a two-ring circus, each Rodeo performance features events that occur in the arena and on the track simultaneously.  Each year, the Salinas Rodeo ranks in the top 20 of nearly 800 North American rodeos sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association

Housing in Salinas ranges from apartments and condos to older established streets in South Salinas and many new subdivisions in North Salinas.
